What:
Opera singing can be difficult for audiences to comprehend, due to its twin traditions of adherence to original language and the aesthetic of prioritizing beautiful singing above all else. The addition of supertitles to opera productions in the 1980s ushered in a welcome new era of audience comprehension, yet many American companies either deem supertitles unnecessary or they are unavailable  in the more intimate spaces so suitable for  contemporary chamber opera. Thus the Singer as Storyteller is both more possible yet  more imperative than ever before.

New Opera West and The Opera Buffs are thrilled to invite Lynn Helding, Professor of Vocal Arts and Opera at USC Thornton School of Music and author of The Musician's Mind, to give a masterclass for singers demonstrating the acoustic and expressive power of American English in  both contemporary American opera and American musical theater repertoire.
