New Opera West is thrilled to announce the return of our seasonal "Pop-Up" Opera featuring 5 new mini-operas!

This season, we are partnering with The Opera Buffs, a Los Angeles based non-profit dedicated to supporting young, emerging classical singers.  Most of the singers performing in our five operas will be from the Opera Buffs' roster of singers.

The new operas were chosen from a world-wide call for scores, in which over 100 composer & librettists submitted their pieces.

As they await the influencer’s visit and final verdict, Jenny questions her cultural legitimacy as a first-generation Mexican-American, as Luz hearkens back to lessons learned from a lifetime of punk rock fandom. Who determines authenticity? How far should we lean into others’ expectations? Whose tacos will emerge victorious?

The story of Friends House takes us to a fictitious Quaker commune, and follows the lives of Sam, Thomas, and David as they search to find a new roommate for their house.
Through their search, we see the challenges of living together, the value of community, and are left to contemplate questions about how and why we choose the communities we are part of. Scene 2 is set in a Quaker meeting house and follows the strands of different community member’s stories as they express what is on their minds.
